Biography

From rockin’ the mic at Rock the Bells for a crowd of 20,000 with Ghost Face and Raekwon to spinning smooth beats behind Thicke at a low-key lounge, A Fly Guy can do either with ease. Born, Rahsaan Alexander in Georgetown Guyana, this future maestro was molded by the Caribbean and South American sounds that surrounded him. Soon however, his family relocated to Flatbush Brooklyn where he discovered the love of hip hop. Immersed in the culture rich streets of New York, A Fly Guy first honed his skills as a lyricist and battle rapper. Inspired by legendary artists like Big Daddy Kane, Special Ed, Biggie Smalls and Heavy D, he’d later take that underground influence with him to South Florida, where he moved yet again. Although now in a new environment, music was always a constant. After graduating from Miami’s Killian High School in 1998, A Fly Guy attended Florida A&M University, studying broadcast journalism and theatre. His college career was short lived, but he managed to get airplay on not only campus but city stations, quickly becoming the FAMU freestyle champion. After locking Tallahassee down, the decision was made to leave school and return to his beloved Brooklyn, in pursuit of a recording contract. And once there, his passion for everything hip hop continued to grow. In fact, with older brother Selwyn Seyfu Hinds as former editor and chief of The Source Magazine, one could even say its in his blood. That connection would prove to be pivotal when the opportunity for an internship at Def Jam presented itself. Now in the presence of heavy hitters like Kevin Liles, Russell Simmons and Lyor Cohen, a dream had finally materialized.

After gaining knowledge from such industry greats, A Fly Guy’s path led him back to Miami, where he attacked Dade County with newfound ferocity. Not only does he continue to impress as an MC, he’s since added the 1s and 2s to his repertoire. Having held residencies at some of Miami’s most exclusive venues such as Mansion, B.E.D, STK and The Shore Club to name a few, it’s a wonder that he’s only been spinning records for 2 short years; clearly a testament to his talent. He’s also DJ’d for events sponsored by Grey Goose, Crown Royal, and The Black American Film Festival, amongst others, and is, himself, endorsed by Status Vodka. His discography includes Gods Gift, A Fly Guys Mixtape and most recently, compilations called the F.U.C. Tapes and Shut Up and Dance. His debut album, Georgetown, was extremely well received and garnered the “indie spotlight” on iTunes, peaking at number three behind Drake and Young Jeezy on the third day of its release. Also a businessman, A Fly Guy has taken his flare for fashion and translated it into the Hollywood Florida sneaker boutique, Stock XChange. Like his names definition, this cool, stylish entrepreneur has
taken the city by storm with no signs of a break in the weather. And, at a time in our country’s economy when most would be hesitant, Rahsaan is fearless. That type of drive has steered him towards success time and time again in every venture and will continue to do so. Weather it be in the booth, on the stage, behind the turntables, or the counter of his shoe store, Rahsaan “A Fly Guy” Alexander not only sets tones, but sets trends.
